History

The "Central Teaching Laboratory of Modern Pharmaceutical Experiment" of West China School of Pharmacy was established in June 2003. By integrating the pharmaceutical experimental curriculum with scientific management, it took the lead nationwide to break the traditionthat laboratoryissubordinate to the teaching and research department, implementing "unified planning, unified construction, unified management, and unified deployment", and realizing "one room with multiple courses, open operation, improved functions, and shared resources". In October 2009, it was named the provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, breaking the barriers of disciplines, integrating resources, promoting interdisciplinary integration thus providing a solid experimental platform for training top-notch innovative talents.

The laboratory is fully responsible for experimental teaching at the West China School of Pharmacy. Per the goalofpharmaceutical training and the principle of "student-oriented" education, a multi-level, and multi-module system has been established. A series of innovative experimental courses have been established, which implements the innovation training for undergraduate students, and further contributes to the training of high-quality modern pharmaceutical innovation talents.

Facility and faculty

The center has more than 20 laboratories (about 2240 square meters), including 1650 instruments with a total value of about 30.84 million yuan. Among them, more than 50 sets of equipment are worth over 100000 yuan (total value of 15.15 million). The large-scale precision instrument and equipment include LC-MS, GC-MS, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, intelligent dissolution meter, Doppler flow meter, high performance liquid chromatography, microplate reader, ultrahigh speed freezing centrifuge, protein purifier, frozen slicer, electric microscope, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, and small animal behavior testing equipment.

The laboratory has built a high-level team withforty-four experimental teaching instructors, includingsevenprofessors (seniorinvestigators),one senior laboratory technician,twenty-nine associate professors (associate investigators), andseven lecturers (assistant investigators). Among them,fortypeoplehave received doctoral degrees (84.1%), and 84.1% with senior professional titles.Theexperimental technician team consists of tenstaff members, 50% ofthemhave graduatedegree and 30% have senior professional titles.

Based on the demands of pharmaceutical experiments, the laboratory has establishedthirty-six rules and regulations, such asthe "Administrative Measures for Undergraduate Experimental Teaching of West China Pharmaceutical College", "Administrative Measures for Laboratory Opening of West China Pharmaceutical College", "Annual Responsibility Statement for Equipment Management and Opening Sharing of West China Pharmaceutical College", "Safety Measures and Emergency Plan for Modern Pharmaceutical Teaching Center Laboratory", "Daily Management Rules and Regulations for Modern Pharmaceutical Teaching Center Laboratory","Training System for the Operation of Valuable Instruments and Equipment in the Laboratory of Modern Pharmacy Teaching Center".

The centeralsoestablishes the safety guarantee system, issues various safety archives, and implements the laboratory safety access system.All techniciansare required to undergo safety training and participate in fire drills. In addition,only students who have received safety training and passed the examination can enter the laboratory. According to the different properties and potential safety hazards of various experimental courses, experimental materials and equipment, the teaching faculties provide necessary safety education and training for students in the whole process of experimental teaching.

The centercurrentlyoffers 19 experimental courses and more than 150 experimental projects for undergraduates majoringin Pharmacy andClinical Pharmacy, and Biotherapy Innovation Class. Annually, more than 500 undergraduates are being trained in the laboratory, and the workload of experimental teaching is about 110000 person hours/year.
