The Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology was founded in 2012, growing out of the Department of Biochemistry (before 2002) and the Department of Biopharmaceutics (after 2002).

In the department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, students may be awarded the master’s and doctoral degrees in Microbial and Biochemical Pharmacy. Facilitated by rational protein design, gene editing, and other modern biopharmaceutical technologies, the department focuses on engineered protein, enzymatic, microbial and biochemical drugs. Notably, the advantage fields span from chemical biology to molecular design of therapeutic enzymes, development of antibody drugs and self-assembled targeted protein drugs, etc.

Members in the department have hosted or participated in diverse projects and programs, including General Program of the NSFC, Youth Fund Project of NSFC, Ph.D. Programs Foundation from Ministry of Education, and International Cooperation Project of Sichuan Science and Technology Department, National Program on Key Basic Research Project of China (973 Program), and National "Eleventh Five-Year" Plan for Science & Technology Support.

The department offers 4 undergraduate courses (Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, Experiment of Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Molecular Biology, and Introduction to Biotechnology Pharmaceuticals), and 4 postgraduate courses (Advanced Biochemical Pharmacy, Modern Biopharmaceutical Technology, etc.). Several teaching reform projects of Sichuan University were led by the department. More than 10 textbooks of national standards were compiled, and a number of patented technologies and SCI papers were published. At present, there are six teachers in the department, including 2 full professors (researchers), 3 associate professors, and 1 lecturers. Among all teachers, there are 2 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors.
